What makes that very first step into the working world more welcoming than smiles from your future colleagues? Read about Shafiq's experience interning at Tandemic in this installment of the Intern Diaries.

It was my first interview, my first internship. I couldn’t sleep the night before, anticipating the type of questions that might come up during my interview. When the day of my interview arrived, I remembered getting ready slightly earlier to just prepare myself but alas I got myself lost finding the place!
Thank God I was assisted by Nicole, an awesome colleague at the office. Whatever fear I had or worry went out the window the moment I stepped into the office. Two things greeted me. The homely atmosphere and the smiles of every Tandemician I was introduced to.

And that’s exactly it. The entire duration of my internship was filled with so many happy memorable moments that I wish everything could have been Instax-ed so those memories could have been pasted on my wall.

The level of trust and the exposure that I had the opportunity to be exposed to have given me new found confidence and the ability to put what I learnt to good use.

If you’re looking for an internship or an opportunity to expand your knowledge especially on the social entrepreneurship scene, then interning with Tandemic is definitely the best step to take!

It’s known that we’ll always remember our first job. I’m glad that I’ll remember mine not because it only my first but because of how much I learnt and fun I had.

Shafiq is a graduate from Monash University and has a deep interest in political science and international relations. He can’t get by without his infamous sunglasses and enjoys music from British bands such as The XX.

Organising a Makeweekend is no walk in the park - so imagine having to organise 13 of them! Cathelynn shares her experience interning and working with us on the Makeweekend team in this installment of the Intern Diaries.

Scissors, check! Masking Tape, check! Make Canvas, check! Sharpies, check! Post-its sticky notes? Check…..wait… Is a dozen of those enough? Maybe not. *Puts in another three stacks of Post-its sticky notes* This is a ritual for me as part of the Weekend Monkeys before heading off to another mind adventure in different states.

Working for Tandemic for half a year (including my two months of internship) has given me a remarkable working experience that I have never been through before. In this working period I travelled to six other states including the Borneo island, met people with vast difference in background and experiences and also gained guidance from experts in forms of applying creative thinking into reality.

There were times when we literally pulled our hair to get the project going, drowned ourselves in coffee and sugar to stay awake, packed unpacked and repacked our luggages so many times a week to travel from one place to another but ultimately all the sweat, tears and Actifast Panadols were worth it as we announced the winner of Makeweekend 2012.

Tandemic was like an extended family for me. Everyday is full of laughter in Tandemic whether it be dirty jokes, lame jokes, overly-attached bros, or the all time favourite hijacking social medias on unattended devices.

Yes, you may be left with side effects such as glaring at people suspiciously as they get closer to your device. Yes, you may be re-educated about… ahem ahem… many things in life and Yes, you may re-question your sanity… But at the end of the day, it is these things that makes you miss Tandemic.

Cathelynn is a Communications graduate from Taylor’s University. She posseses remarkable artistic talent and enjoys musicals (Disney movies and Les Miserables top her list) as well as scrolling through 9Gag. She also loves cats, obviously (who doesn’t love cats?).

8th of March is the day you remember to be grateful about living in a comfortable age for women, for it is International Women’s Day!

Honouring the bravery and sacrifices that women (and men!) have made for us, spend the day showing your appreciation to the women in your lives, look for activities you can do and women’s causes you can find!

A surefire way to absorb the entirety of International Women’s Day is to head on down to Alliance Française de Kuala Lumpur (AFKL) for their women’s day celebration, where there will be cocktail reception, exhibition, book introduction film screening as well as a talk by AIM’s Executive Director.

At least that’s what Tandemic is doing! We are all looking forward to the film screening section as we will be reviewing ‘Women are Heroes’ by JR, a French artist known for his graffiti-style art in public places (he calls it the largest art gallery in the world). Admissions are free, so we’ll see you there!

Location: AFKL Gallery – Alliance Française de Kuala Lumpur
Address: 12 Lorong Gurney, 54100 Kuala Lumpur
Date & Time: 8 March @ 7:00 PM

See the event listing on Kakiseni here.

I got to meet some really creative
and open minded people during my 9 weeks there. Another great thing about working at Tandemic
is that I felt like I was part of a team that was making a difference. I also spent most of the 9 weeks
laughing at the funny pranks that kept happening on a daily basis – note: “Kim Long Thril”

A day at Tandemic never really felt like hard work because of the great personalities and positive
atmosphere.

To sum it all up …. It’s basically spending the day with friends while working to achieve
our goals.

The Design Thinking Toolkit we’ve been working on is finally making its way to printing and manufacturing. We’re excited to be sending it out selected student groups in Malaysia so they can start discovering how design thinking can help them come up with great, human-centred innovations for social projects, business initiatives — and certainly many other things we haven’t imagined yet.

Why the Design Thinking Toolkit? There’s a lot of great work that’s already been done out there by our friends at IDEO and the Stanford d.School. We were particularly inspired by IDEO’s method cards, which are a great approach to packaging information about some of the exploratory methods. What if we could package the design thinking process this way and guide people through the whole process?

The Design Thinking Toolkit was created to be a design thinking workshop in a box. It includes method cards not just for anthropology but also brainstorming and some other key steps. The kit also includes process cards, which guide users through the design thinking process, as well as some really cool prototyping materials (more on that later).

If you’re a Malaysian university student, you could qualify to receive the design thinking toolkit for free. Check out www.designthinking.my and apply.

Our interns play a huge role in shaping the company - we learn from them as much as (we hope) they learn from us. Debra sheds some light on how it was like to be an intern at Tandemic in this installment of the Intern Diaries.

When one thinks about the working world and a picture of an office comes in mind, I’m sure you can agree that you’d expect it to be filled with old people in suits. Okay, maybe not very old but a serious vibe in there.

I was taken aback when I first met Kal & Nicole for my interview. They were so much younger than I expected and laid back, I knew I wanted to intern there. I was quite certain they were pulling my leg when they explained to me how everything worked. When I met everyone during my first day of the internship, it was quite overwhelming how friendly and bubbly they were. The working environment was not too harsh and I hardly noticed the hours go by.

There are numerous moments that I enjoyed being a part of the team. As the media innovator for Tandemic, I was able to work on Do Something Good, an online volunteering platform. Through this project I developed good relations with the Malaysian media, I managed to meet many Malaysian celebrities and politicians such as the Prime Minister. Furthermore, I was able to watch how television interviews were conducted and the likes. Another project that Tandemic is responsible for is Makeweekend, a weekend event where young people come together to come up with innovative ways to solve some of the problems we face in our daily lives and create prototypes for them. I was lucky enough to attend one of the Makeweekends and enjoyed the entire experience, from having to wake up at ungodly hours of the day to setup, to passing out the moment a bed is in sight.

Working with people such as Kal, Tasnim, and Nicole taught me how to be ahead of things and completing tasks before deadlines (okay, not ALL were on time). I also learnt that “sakit puan” didn’t actually mean “stressed out” as Ariff had led me to believe. I was also able to pick up skills on how to address people and talk to them with regard to their posts and field of work. Most important of all, I was finally pushed to trying out Nasi Lemak and it was so good it got me thinking how it was that I survived without some in my life????! Last but not least, Tandemic taught me how to tweet jack, Facebook-jack, and email-jack (yes it got creative) any poor sod that decided to forget to lock their devices. LOL!!

As I write this post itself I am craving a cold cup of coffee and roti kaya, followed by a trip to The Famous Spot: Ravi’s. I miss having scrum meetings and singing to “Adopt Me Maybe” and having Ariff bring out Julia (his ukulele) and play for the office. I miss having Jin say “like” and emphasise on recycling, sharing hilarious videos with Eve and Shafiq as we work, “socialising” with Ariff & Sky. Furthermore, I miss the out of office activities we would go for together such as karaoke, board game night, jazz night, Ariff’s play. Most of all I think it is the early morning calls from Nicole that I miss and the drive to work!

I’m sure I have missed out a whole lot of other things that I enjoyed, missed and learnt but one thing I am certain of, Tandemic and its people made a GREAT impact in my life and I am thankful for once being a part of it. At the end of my internship, I was sad to part with them because at Tandemic everyone was like a family.

Debra is currently studying Communications at Taylor’s University and is spending her holidays in Tanzania. She speaks at least 4 languages (understanding Bahasa counts too!) and loves the sea.

We love how our interns apply all the skills they across all the projects that we work on. In this installment of the Intern Diaries, Aziff shares his experiences interning with us at Tandemic.

“Good morning!”

I loved hearing that every morning at work. It was a sign of a close-knit office environment where co-workers value each other. Amidst the occasional chaos involving a series of tweet-jack and Facebook-rapes and the insane amount of coffee my co-workers consumed, my two-month internship with Tandemic was nothing short of a great experience.

Two months, I believe, was too short a time to find out my purpose in the company. I wavered between designing graphics, editing videos and contributing write-ups. As a Journalism major, perhaps this wasn’t my place. But nonetheless, I felt Tandemic a spectacular place to be. I’ve read about Google’s awesome work environment and Tandemic would pretty much mirror it, apart from the absence of a gym.

My co-workers were a handful of insane fun, filled with random and hilarious conversations. Were it not for my personal policy, I would have tweeted the random quotes that frequently floated the office. As much fun as they were, when it came to work – Nothing less but awesome results was expected. And in all instances, nothing less was delivered.

In my two-months with Tandemic, I never had the chance to join a ‘Makeweekend’, a company brainchild project to empower youths through design thinking. Sadly, even after I left, thanks to a crammed semester, I didn’t have the opportunity to join the one held in UiTM Shah Alam either. But I was proud nonetheless. Happy that I was part of a company whose vision is to bring society closer and just make things work better by showing people that they can with their own hands.

I would never forget the day my boss, Kal dragged in several pieces of jackfruits into the office (which we never ate and were left to rot outside on the stairs). Or the immense pressure suffered for a week trying to perfect the script for a promotional video. A lesson well learned would be to never leave your devices lying around unattended and always log-out of your social networks, even if you’d be gone for a minute.

My momentum or personal self may personally not be suited for this industry. But if there’s a place where I’ve felt like I was part of a family institution, where everyone mattered and where amidst the fun, we were all doing something worthwhile – It’d be Tandemic.

Aziff is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, and is talented not only with words but also with the camera. He blogs regularly at http://strangereyes.tumblr.com/ and regularly contributes opinion pieces to Free Malaysia Today.

It was crunch time, it was chaos. The confirmed participants for this weekend’s Makeweekend were far below targeted numbers, and the caterer and venue for the one taking place next weekend were still unconfirmed. And what about the press release for the Makeweekend that just took place a few days ago?

To work at Tandemic in the last quarter of 2012 was to feel the pressure that mounted every day – pressure that went beyond meeting targets, but also to leave a lasting impression on our audience. This was one of my favourite parts about working at Tandemic: meeting targets was not our sole focus, and the bigger picture was always in sight. With Makeweekend and Do Something Good, the projects that I mainly worked on, it was always about making an impact on a grassroots level.

As a kid fresh out of ‘A’ Levels, the opportunities, guidance and experience that Tandemic gave me were unexpected and absolutely invaluable – and for that I will always be grateful. But besides all of that, there is just something about Tandemic. It’s not just the incessant social network jacking (yes, this does happen a LOT). I would attribute it to the energy that makes it conducive for such shameless violation of your online profiles. After all, these guiltless perpetrators and the ones who stand by and laugh along are the very ones who stand at hand to show me the ropes and bail me out when contingencies occur. They are friends and mentors, all at once.

So thank you, Tandemic, for those six months I spent with you. It was an amazing time.

Yap Jin Rui is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and hopes to combine her passion for the environment and sustainable living with her education in engineering to build environmentally friendly and sustainable infrastructure in the future. She likes dogs, collects wallets and nags at people to recycle. She reblogs photos of cute animals and funny cartoons at http://littleroundboxes.tumblr.com/
